DAY 10 - MIYAJIMA ISLAND

Untitled

Saying farewell to Tokyo today, to head to explore some more of Japan.
Next stop Hiroshima - after some breakfast. I love the little well wishes you get on this packaging.

Pretty early train, but worth it to get to Hiroshima at a decent time. Journey is around 4 hours and we thought we'd do the longest journey first and then head our way back up over the course of the second week.

Below: Car display stand in Shin-Osaka station. There are many words I'd could use to describe this little square car but Hustler probably wouldn't be one of them.

After dropping our bags off at the hotel, we got a local train and the ferry over to Miyajima Island.
You can do this whole journey on a JR Pass if you've got one.

Below: Grilled oysters - delicious.

Wild deer live and roam around freely on the island, they are perfectly tame but can be a little bit cheeky. This one was having a snooze, but if you're not careful they might pinch food from your hand or eat your map.

Miyajima town/village is picturesque with Itsukushima Shrine up on the hill behind it.
There are plenty of places to eat and buy souvenirs as well.

After a long afternoon of exploring the island, we found a little place to eat and enjoy a beer. I went for conger eel, which was amazing. I highly recommend trying it. After dark we took a stroll back to the famous Torii gate to see it all light up at night. The tide had been going out all afternoon and now it was dry enough to walk all the way out it.
